Kromi One is a new home computer for 2D and 2.5D games and creative work, in the tradition of the Amiga. Its own chipset, Aura, runs in the FPGA of the AMD Kria K26; its firmware, KROM, and its operating system, KromiOS, are written for it. A prototype runs today on the AMD Kria KV260.

Kromi One follows the idea of the Amiga, one fixed, fully documented machine you can understand completely, but it is a new platform, not a remake: it runs no old software. Aura draws Full HD at 60 frames per second: sprites, layers, colour grading, AMD FSR 1 upscaling and textured, animated triangles for 2.5D. Programs never touch its registers; the firmware checks every command. Every frame is verified against a reference renderer, bit for bit. A developer edition on the KV260 comes first; Kromi One with its own board follows.

Kurz gefasst · Deutsch

Facts

Kromi One at a glance

What it is
A new home computer for 2D and 2.5D games and creative work, in the tradition of the Amiga. A new platform, not a remake: it runs no old software.
Running today
A prototype on the AMD Kria KV260 starter kit: the chipset draws Full HD at 60 frames per second, the firmware starts the machine, and the operating system, KromiOS, runs on it.
Processor
AMD Kria K26 module: four Arm Cortex-A53 cores, all free for programs, plus the programmable logic (FPGA) that holds the chipset.
Chipset
Aura, in the FPGA: Klara draws (sprites, rotation and scaling, blend modes, textured and animated triangles), Dora builds the picture (layers composed during scan-out, 3D colour tables, upscaling with AMD FSR 1), Aria plays sound (48 kHz stereo).
Firmware
KROM starts the machine and checks every command a program sends to the chipset, in about a microsecond. Programs never touch the chipset's registers, so the chipset can improve without breaking software.
Operating system
KromiOS: a desktop in the spirit of AmigaOS, with windows, apps written in Lua and a Terminal. It starts in seconds, with no account.
Verified
A reference renderer decides every pixel. The board computes a checksum of every frame it sends and compares it: 432,009 of 432,009 frames exact in a two-hour run; 11,979 of 11,979 in the filmed run.
What comes next
A developer edition on the KV260 for early supporters comes first; Kromi One with its own board and case follows. No dates or prices yet.
Made by
Sergej Klementinovski, near Munich, Germany.
