The home computer is back, built for modern 2D and 2.5D games.
One fixed, fully documented machine that drives Full HD at 60 frames per second, with thousands of sprites, hardware layers, upscaling and film-style colour grading.
Remember switching on an Amiga or a C64?
It was ready in seconds, it was yours, and you could understand every part of it. A whole generation learned to program that way. The best developers pushed those fixed machines far beyond what anyone thought possible.
Today's computers have lost that. They are general-purpose devices controlled by three platforms and buried under drivers, updates, accounts and store fees. Building a game today means fighting all that software instead of mastering a machine.
Kromi One brings the home computer back, with today's power.
A modern home computer for 2D and 2.5D games and creative work
Kromi One is built on AMD's Kria platform. It has its own custom chipset, Aura, its own firmware, KROM, and its own operating system, KromiOS.
Kromi One runs on AMD's Kria K26 module, which combines a four-core ARM processor and a large programmable chip. Aura turns it into a home computer, a new kind of product on AMD's hardware.
Aura runs in programmable logic, so a firmware update can give machines already sold new chipset features. A fixed chip can't do that.
KROM starts the machine, controls the hardware and gives every program one stable, documented contract, in the tradition of the Amiga's Kickstart.
A desktop system in the spirit of AmigaOS. It comes on an SD card, as Workbench once came on a floppy, and installs on Kromi One's 16 GB internal storage.
The Amiga's chips had names (Agnus, Denise, Paula), and so do Aura's parts.
Measured on real hardware, not in simulation
The Aura chipset runs today on the AMD Kria KV260 and is measured frame by frame.
- Resolution
- Full HD, 1920 × 1080, at 60 frames per second; every frame is checked bit for bit
- Sprites
- About 1 μs of chipset time per sprite, so 10,000 sprites take about 10 ms of a 16.7 ms frame
- A full game scene
- Sprites plus four full-screen scrolling layers at 60 fps, with about a third of each frame to spare
- Upscaling
- AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution 1 (FSR 1) built into the chipset: sharp upscaling from 720p, with a crisp 1080p display on top
- Picture
- Blend modes for light, glow and shadow; smooth rotation and scaling; film-style colour grading; endless parallax scrolling
- Processor
- Four CPU cores for programs; game logic for 10,000 objects takes 4.6 ms per frame on three cores while the chipset draws
- Headroom
- The chipset uses about 40 % of the chip's logic cells, leaving room for the next features
- Development
- An emulator, so developers can start without hardware; example programs in C and assembly
Since then there have been 12 releases of the machine contract and 15 accepted chipset builds. Every feature is checked bit for bit against a reference model, some are backed by mathematical (formal) proofs, and the full test suite runs before every release.
KromiOS
A desktop system in the spirit of AmigaOS. It comes on an SD card, as Workbench once came on a floppy, and installs on Kromi One's 16 GB internal storage. KromiOS will ship with the machine.
Free to develop, free to publish
A free SDK, complete documentation, and anyone may publish software for Kromi One, either freely or through the optional KromiOS store. A developer edition exists; its public documentation is the next step.
Steam takes 30 % and Playdate 25 %. Every program in the store is reviewed for quality and safety, so you can trust what you install.
Indie and hobby game developers who want one fixed, modern platform to master, and an audience that notices their work.
Demosceners and creative coders who love getting the last ounce of performance out of a machine.
Home-computer enthusiasts who want the Amiga feeling with modern power, not a replica.
People who want a home computer of their own, outside Windows, macOS and Linux: for writing, planning, calculating, mail, and their own Lua tools.
Players of 2D and 2.5D indie games who want a games and creative computer with character, for the living room or the desk.
Learners and families: a computer simple enough to understand completely, as a way into programming.
